Qualification Profil
The programme in equine science are intended to teach wide spread basic knowledge on the
theoretical and practical aspects of equine management stud management, breeding, equestrianism
and other equine sports, including management and health care. Besides basic knowledge that is
expected to be relevant for a prolonged period of time, there is an emphasis on acquisition, practice
and application of new knowledge and skills.

General qualifications

The programme in equine science are intended to establish professional competence for leadership
functions in Austria and in the German speaking countries as well as in areas in Europe and beyond.
The following general skills are developed and promoted:
- analytical and critical thought processes
- fast and effective acquisition of information
- problem-based thought and action
- application of the knowledge gained under consideration of the socio-economic environment
- social competences (responsibility, team skills, leadership)
Specific qualifications
Graduates of the programme in equine science shall
- have in-depth knowledge about the morphology and physiology of the equine organism as
well as about the behaviour and the needs of horses; on this basis graduates are expected to
consider the ethically relevant aspects (training methods, limits of performance, animal
transports).
- have in-depth knowledge about the horse-keeping that is species-adequate, feeding of and
care for horses.
- have in-depth knowledge of health care and first aid for horses
- have in-depth knowledge of reproductive physiology, fertility and reproduction of horses
- have in-depth knowledge of breeding, selection and evaluation of horses
- have in-depth knowledge of the management and the legal framework (laws, as well as
insurance and liability) of horse breeding, keeping, valuation, and trade of horses as well as
equine sports
- have in-depth knowledge of organisation of horse breeding as well as of the various
disciplines of equine sports
- be in a position to assess the training of horses for all disciplines of equestrianism, racing and
driving.
- know the traditions of horse breeding and of the various disciplines of equine sports, and they
shall be capable to develop these further within the changing economic and social
environment.
- be adequately trained, to research and give relevant practical answers to questions arising in
equine economy

Practicals that are integrated into the curriculum are enhancing the application of the knowledge
taught; and they lead to early contacts with potential employers in the area of equine economy and
equestrian sports.
